About Ted Conway, Houston English Tutor
I'm Ted Conway, a Texas-certified English Language Arts and ESL teacher in Houston. I tutor teens who are struggling in English class, including students with ADHD and multilingual students, and adults who need stronger reading and writing for school or work. Sessions are one on one and online.

Texas-certified ELA and ESL teacher since 2016
I've taught in Katy ISD, Galena Park ISD and Houston ISD, at Wharton County Junior College, and at adult learning centers in Houston. I've run ESL programs on three campuses and coached teachers on working with multilingual students.
Since 2020, most of my tutoring has been online and one on one, often with students who have ADHD or other learning differences. I also teach adults every week in Houston, in training programs for doctors, dentists and other medical professionals who earned their degrees outside the U.S.
How I tutor struggling and multilingual students
Repeating the same material won't make it click. Struggling students and multilingual students need what every student needs: a teacher who starts where they are.
That can feel slow. Some conversations look off topic, and a lot of teachers find it uncomfortable. It's also where confidence gets built and where the switch flips from off to on.
Every student starts with a free consultation, where I look at a recent piece of their writing. After each session, parents get a short note on what we covered and what comes next. Between sessions, students can practice with the free paragraph writing tool I built around my T.E.D.L. method.
Why I became an English teacher
I come from a family of educators. My mother is a reading and dyslexia specialist and my father worked with autistic learners before moving into educational sales. Both of them pushed me toward teaching.
I started out helping adults build English skills and prepare for the GED. There, I watched people gain confidence in themselves and in English. The social-emotional side of learning has been part of how I teach ever since.
From adult education I moved to high school ESL. Soon after, I was leading ESL programs.
